Jasper names new school superintendent
Submitted by erinnmcguire on Fri, 01/15/2010 - 2:32pm.
The Jasper County Board of Education has hired a second interim superintendent for the 3,300 student school district. Larry B. Heath, of Lugoff, is expected to begin Jan. 20 and expected to stay through the end of the school year, according to school district spokesman Robert Huff. He will replace interim superintendent John S. Taylor, who was hired last summer on a month-to-month bases following the resignation of then-superintendent Delacy Sanford. Heath will continue to work on a month-to-month basis until a permanent replacement is hired, Huff said. He will be paid $10,000 per month, as was Taylor. Taylor’s contract ran out at the end of December and he opted not to continue due to an illness in the family. Heath brings 38 years of service in education, all of it served in the Chester County School District. He recently retired as superintendent of the Chester County School District that serves 6,000 students in 12 schools. The Johnson C. Smith University graduate holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from Winthrop University and Educational Specialist certification from the University of South Carolina. Heath began his career as an elementary school teacher, moved on to teach math in high school, and became assistant principal of the high school before moving on to district supervisory positions. After serving five years as an elementary principal, he again moved to the district level as a director of secondary education, advancing to director and later assistant Superintendent for Instruction for eight years. Since 2000, Heath served a year as an interim, then five years as an associate superintendent, and completed three years as Chester County Superintendent before taking retirement in July. The only people that seem surprised is the school board...New Schools, new superintendent, new teachers and a new low score..This will take a lot of work to turn around by every parent that send their children to Jasper county schools..Until the parents get to work this is what the system will turn out..Scared yet???U.S history and the Constitution of the United States not being taught in these classes???Only 15 percent of the students passed..The rest failed...This county is in trouble..Real trouble
