Hardeeville hotelier charged under prostitution statute

HARDEEVILLE – The owner of a motel in downtown Hardeeville was arrested Monday following a month-long investigation into unsavory activity at the former landmark establishment.

Mukund “Mookie” Desai, 62, was charged under the state’s prostitution statute. Police say Desai knowingly rented out his rooms to women for the purpose of prostitution, a misdemeanor. A second prostitution offense is a felony.

Three other men and one woman were also charged in connection with the investigation, two of whom were staying at the motel.

Shooting suspect remains on the run

A Hardeeville man wanted in connection with a March shooting was spotted Thursday around town.

A short car and foot chase followed, but Carlton German has seemingly eluded the cops again.

German, 23, is wanted on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill. German is accused of shooting 18-year-old Joe Chaney twice with a .40-caliber handgun while outside the Robin’s Roost Apartment complex during a drug deal gone bad on March 11, said Capt. Arnold Middleton of the Hardeeville Police Department.

$200,000 grant awarded to Jasper County School District

COLUMBIA -- The Jasper County School District is in line to receive a $200,000 federal grant.

The rural district is one of 13 recipients from the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants totaling $2.5 million for after-school programs.

The funds assist about 19,000 students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools and are spent on language arts, mathematics, science, technology, and health and safety programs.

Taste of Jasper set for Saturday, July 10

A Taste of Jasper has definitely put a spotlight on the Jasper County Boys & Girls Club, according to Anne Walker.

The event to raise money for the Boys & Girls Club will be held for the third consecutive year Saturday at the Farmers' Market in Ridgeland.

Walker, the club director, said the event has helped rally community support.

"The community is really aware of the club and more and more people work in the community to help have this be a successful event," Walker said.

TCL registration fair July 15

The Technical College of the Lowcountry will hold an on-the-spot registration fair from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. July 15 at each of its three campuses:

The event is geared toward assisting those looking to begin their college careers and also toward helping returning TCL students complete the registration process for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 19.

JCNU to offer USDA mortgage workshop

Jasper County Neighbors United will host a mortgage workshop for Jasper County residents interested in owning their own home.

The workshop will be 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Deerfield Community Center.

Representatives from the United States Department of Agriculture and Lowcountry Council of Governments will be on had to explain different loan programs offered to Jasper County residents to include a $10,000 down payment assistance program for first time homebuyers.

Staff will be available to assist with the prequalification process.

Free AIDS testing Saturday

BEAUFORT - Free HIV/AIDS testing will be offered Saturday in coordination with National HIV Testing Day at the Healing Waters Mission in Beaufort.

The church can be found at 1 Joe Frazier Road.

Testing will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Blood pressure and diabetes testing will also be offered at the health fair.

“We hope that this year will be an even bigger success than last year,” said Donna Farrington, the event’s coordinator.

Last year, about 100 people registered for the event and 11 people chose to be tested for HIV.

Jasper County planner charged with DUI, leaving crash

Jasper County Planning Director David Jirousek was placed on administrative leave without pay Tuesday after he was arrested in Beaufort County early Sunday and charged with driving while drunk and leaving the scene of an accident.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Jirousek, 31, hit a fence and tree on Sunset Boulevard on Lady’s Island around 2:15 a.m. When deputies responded to an anonymous call, they found his 2002 Nissan Pathfinder in the fence line of a house but no one nearby.

Georgia teen dies in I-95 crash

A 17-year-old girl died Sunday evening while traveling in a car with three of her siblings, according to the Hardeeville Police Department.

Danielle Alicia Lee of Hinesville, Ga., was the front seat passenger in vehicle headed south on Interstate 95 when it fishtailed and ran off the roadway and in to the median, said Capt. Arnold Middleton.

It had rained and the roadways were slick, he said. According to witnesses, the vehicle attempted to pass a tractor trailer and when it did, the vehicle began to swerve back and forth and lost control, Middleton said.
