VIM clinic to service Jasper patients

The Bluffton-Jasper County Volunteers in Medicine Clinic is close to opening its doors, according to the clinic's founder.

Jennifer Brown of Hardeeville, the founder of the local VIM clinic, is still trying to iron its operational hours.

The clinic has received its 501(c) 3 nonprofit status and will lease a former doctor's office on S.C. 46 across from the Bluffton Post Office, Brown said.

City crime drops, RiverPort makes progress

Collaboration with the community has made fighting crime a successful program, according to Hardeeville Police Chief Richard Nagy.

The chief reported the improvements to the Hardeeville City Council Thursday saying that the percentage in various crimes have dropped dramatically, even in the last six months.

According to the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, which is compiled by the State Law Enforcement Division, there was a 50 percent drop in robberies, 56 percent drop in property crimes and a 44 percent drop in assaults.

Wanted: Future firefighters

Hardeeville’s young people interested in learning more about a career in the fire service may get their questions answered through a program sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America.

Hardeeville Firefighter Jason Stevens will be heading a training for junior firefighters adults ages 14 to 20 who have successfully completed the eighth grade and maintain a C average in school.

Food co-op to expand into Jasper County

A local food-op has expanded into Jasper County and will include food distribution points in Hardeeville and Ridgeland.

The next distribution is June 26.

The food will be handed out through the Bluffton Food Co-op and is sponsored by the Angel Food and Grace Coastal Church.

MADD volunteers sought

Anyone who has experienced an injury or death as a result of a drunken driver is being sought to volunteer with the local chapter of Mother’s Against Drunken Driving.

Cops: Drugs seized from Walsh Drive home

The Beaufort/Jasper Multi-Agency Drug Task Force (DTF) arrested nine people on various drug and other criminal charges Tuesday and Wednesday.

The arrests were the result of four search warrants executed in northern Beaufort and Jasper counties, according to a press release from Sgt. Robin McIntosh of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Arzillo, Carroll sweep Hardeeville City Council race

Sal Arzillo and Sherry Carroll unseated both of Hardeeville City Council's incumbents in Tuesday's municipal election.

Sherry Carroll, a long-time educator and wife of municipal judge John Carroll, garnered the most votes with 167. Arzillo, a local businessman who has been a big advocate of the Greater Hardeeville Chamber of Commerce, received 162 votes.

Bill Horton got 149 votes and Brooks Willis received 72 votes.

Both incumbents shook the winners' hands.

City Council election today

The polls are open until 7 p.m. tonight at the community room at City Hall.

The candidates include incumbents Bill Horton and Brooks Willis. The challengers are Sherry Carroll and Sal Arzillo.

Saturday is registration deadline to vote in primaries

COLUMBIA – Saturday, May 8, is the deadline to register to vote in the June primary elections, which could bring a shake-up in state representation for Beaufort County residents.

Primary voters in three S.C. House districts will have a contested race to consider on June 8.

Incumbent Reps. Kenneth Hodges, D-Green Pond, who holds the District 121 seat, Richard Chalk, R-Hilton Head Island, who serves District 123, and Curtis Brantley, D-Ridgeland, of District 122, all face a challenge from within their party.

10 Hardeeville students arrested

HARDEEVILLE – Ten Hardeeville High and Middle School students were either arrested or detained Monday afternoon after fire alarms were pulled, firecrackers were lit in stairwells, smoke bombs were deployed and fights broke out among students and responding officers, according to authorities.
At least two students reported injuries from the firecrackers, according to Hardeeville Police Capt. Arnold Middleton.

One student apparently lost some hearing and another student’s arm was singed from the firecrackers, he said.
