H1N1 flu shots to begin for Jasper County school children

The following schedule has been announced for school H1N1 flu shot clinics in Jasper County public and private schools.

The shots are free and innoculations will be provided by the S. C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The shots are voluntary and written permission from parentsd are required. The shots will be administered during the school hours and parents do not have to be present. Shots will be given by DHEC nurses while school nurses and staff will manage the clinic activity.

Jamaican killed in wreck west of Ridgeland

RIDGELAND — A Jamaican man living on Hilton Head Island was killed when he was thrown from a pickup truck that missed a sharp curve about 5 a.m. Sunday on Tarboro Road by the Great Swamp Baptist Church, Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls said.

The name of the victim was withheld pending notification of his family. Sauls said he was a Jamaican national apparently in a work program on the island.

ALA closed due to flu outbreak

The private Abundant Life Academy in Hardeeville closed Wednesday for the remainder of the week with about a third of its students out with flu-like symptoms.

“Every child we sent home had a fever of 100 degrees or better. We checked them ourselves,” said Headmaster Julie Bowman. “So is it H1N1 (the swine flu)? I don’t know, but it’s definitely flu-like symptoms.”

About 150 students attend the private school, which offers classes kindergarten through the 12th grade.

Comptroller release ‘stimulus’ payouts

State Comptroller Richard Eckstrom distributed the following information Wednesday to showcase where South Carolina’s $730 million in federal stimulus money has been spent “so far,” according to a press release.

More than two-thirds of the funds are going to state agencies that pay Medicaid and unemployment benefits. Here’s a breakdown:

Jasper Port group meets behind closed doors on Hilton Head

The Jasper Ocean Terminal Joint Project Office was formed to move the Jasper Port project forward by initiating specific steps such as feasibility studies, business planning, environmental assessments and the release of federal easements on the property.

The six-member board of directors of the Jasper Ocean Terminal Joint Project Office consists of two members appointed by each of the states’ governors and two members appointed by each port’s board chair from his board of directors.

Vendors sought for community health fair

A community health fair will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 at the Jasper County Farmers Market in Ridgeland.

The New Life Center Commission on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse along with Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor the health fair, an effort to educate the public and increase access to services available locally.

Vendors who can provide educational information to promote better health in Jasper County are being sought.

Bond denied for teen accused of killing 85-year-old man

RIDGELAND - A prosecutor called 16-year-old Breon Alexandre a "dangerous human being" at a bond hearing today (Monday, Oct. 12) and requested that bond be denied.

"I can not think of a more dangerous human being," said Solicitor Duffie Stone during the bond hearing at the old Ridgeland Middle School.

Court is being held in the former school while repairs and renovations are being made to the Ridgeland courthouse.

Bond denied for man accused of killing girlfriend

RIDGELAND - A 44-year-old Purrysburg man accused of beating his girlfriend to death will remain behind bars until his trial.

Judge Perry M. Buckner denied bond for Terry D. Swanger on Monday at the former Ridgeland Middle School. Court is being held at the old school while renovations are being made to the county's courthouse.

Swanger is accused of killing his 45-year-old girlfriend Vikki Pope. Her body was found Aug. 6 underneath a blanket in the backseat of a vehicle parked outside a mobile home they shared in Purrysburg.

Library offers job seekers, students help

LearningExpress Library is an a Web-based learning solution that provides everyone, from elementary students to adult learners, with access to a collection of test-preparation tools, skill-building materials and career resources, according to Beth McNeer, director of the Allendale Hampton Jasper Regional Library.

Medicare workshops to be offered

The Lowcountry Council of Governments and the Agency on Aging will hold workshops to help with Medicare comparisons. The fall open season is Nov. 15 to Dec. 31.

LOCOG will help with comparisons for Part C health plans and Part D drug plans. Be sure to bring your Medicare card, and a list of any prescription medication you take.
