Council votes to buy Heyward House

Some residents say the City Council should spend taxpayers’ money on something other than an old house.

The Hardeeville City Council voted 3-1 Thursday night to move forward in purchasing one of the city’s oldest structures despite some residents’ opposition.

Mayor Bronco Bostick and Councilmen Brooks Willis and Bill Horton voted to buy the old Heyward House at 110 Main St. in a second reading of the ordinance for $150,000. The bank loan would allow city officials to borrow up to $300,000 for repairs and renovations.

Hardeeville officials announced Thursday that Powerconnects, Inc. will soon open a computer-based training facility and bring 10 new jobs with it.

Powerconnects, Inc. will be located at 875 Stiney Road and will be open for operations to serve all local and surrounding residents. Once open, anyone looking for “job specific training” in industries relevant to the growth plans of the Lowcountry will have convenient trainee access on a daily basis.

JCNU moves locations

Jasper County Neighbors United has moved from its location next to the Hardeeville Thrift Store to Mercy Circle off Garr Lane.

JCNU, a community development corporation focused on developing and improving low income communities, recently purchased Mercy Circle, formerly the Branchwood apartments.

JCNU’s new office will be at 1118 Garr Lane, unit C1, and will open Monday, Oct. 5.

JCNU plans to begin $1 million worth of renovations, to include updating the exterior of all of the buildings and replacing the windows, very soon, according to Executive Director Mary Charles Davis.

Kids’ bereavement camp offered

Hospice Care of the Lowcountry will hold its 7th Annual Kid’s Bereavement Camp Oct. 24.

The camp will be 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Hampton Lake, off the Bluffton Parkway.

“This camp helps children express the feelings they have that are related to their loss and decrease their sense of isolation by letting them know other children have losses too,” said Lynn Brooks, executive director for Hospice Care of the Lowcountry.

Maritime commission to hire consultant by year's end

CHARLESTON - The Savannah River Maritime Commission on Tuesday, Sept. 22, moved ahead with the next step in its proposal to hire a private consultant to assess the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' draft Environmental Impact Statement on the $350 million Savannah Harbor Expansion Project.

Morris Publishing announces agreement with bondholders

Morris Publishing Group LLC, parent company of Hardeeville Today and Bluffton Today and 12 other daily newspapers, announced Friday it has agreed to the terms of a restructuring agreement with the holders of more than 75 percent of its outstanding senior subordinated notes.

If the restructuring is approved, the holders of the $278.5 million in outstanding notes would exchange their existing notes for $100 million of new second lien secured notes.

Jasper County scores state conservation funds

COLUMBIA -The South Carolina Conservation Bank is alive and well, and this month, Jasper County got proof: A 2,200-acre land deal, facilitated by the Nature Conservancy, to protect it from development.

In exchange, the private owner gets $442,000.

Stone supplier moves from Hilton Head to Hardeeville

Fifteen new jobs are said to be headed to Jasper County, due to the opening of AGM Imports' new Hardeeville distribution facility.

The company's Hilton Head Island building, at 33 Hunter Rd., will be sold, said Douglas Smith, the company's chief financial officer, in an interview.

"We'll be bringing our current, existing staff and we'll have the need to grow," he said, adding that they are setting up inside equipment now and will soon be able to transfer inventory to the Hardeeville building.

United Way kicks off fund drive today

United Way of the Lowcountry, serving Beaufort and Jasper counties, will kick off its annual fundraising campaign at 8:30 a.m. today simultaneously at Hilton Head Hospital, Coastal Carolina Hospital and Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Following the kickoffs, more than 100 volunteers will join Day of Caring volunteer activities at the sites of 16 United Way partner agencies.

Highway to be dedicated to slain trooper

A portion of Interstate 95 in Jasper County will be dedicated Friday in a ceremony to a S.C. Highway patrolman shot to death during a traffic stop in 1985.

First Class Bruce Smalls was shot six times Sept. 27, 1985, during a traffic stop by Richard Johnson, a hitchhiker later sentenced to death for murdering the driver of a motor coach, Dan Swanson.

As Johnson approached the RV, he was gunned down. He was 30.
